Sheer overlay fabric is cloth that is intentionally semi-transparent — designed to be worn over a solid underlayer rather than as a standalone opaque garment. The combination of the translucent overlay with the opaque base beneath it creates layered visual depth that a single fabric, however well-printed or woven, cannot replicate. It is why layered construction is dominant in occasion wear, kaftan design, and formal dressing in 2026: the finished piece reads as more dimensional, more considered, and more interesting than a single-layer garment in the same fabric.
How sheer overlay construction works
In its simplest form, a sheer overlay garment has two layers: an inner layer that provides full opacity and coverage, and an outer layer that adds texture, colour modulation, or surface interest while remaining partially transparent. The eye reads the combination as one garment, but the visual depth comes from seeing through the outer layer to the inner layer — sometimes partially, sometimes almost completely, depending on the sheerness of the outer fabric and the colour relationship between the two layers.
The most effective combinations are usually tonal rather than contrasting: a deep navy sheer over a matching navy lining reads as a single deep navy garment with textural depth; the same navy sheer over a pale lining creates a layered colour effect where the lining shifts the apparent hue of the outer fabric. Both are valid choices, but they read very differently in a finished garment and even more differently in photography, which is why sampling both options before cutting is worth the extra step.
The sheer fabrics in the HIBA collection
Sheer Lightweight Viscose Embossed Jacquard
102 GSM · 150cm wide · 80% viscose, 20% polyester · raised motif on a translucent base in four directions
Shop Fabric — From $16/mAvailable in Formal Black, Dark Blue, and Dark Burgundy — all deep colourways chosen to work tonal over a matching lining rather than creating a colour contrast. The motif sits on a translucent base that lets light pass through, so the finished garment layers the embossed woven texture of the outer fabric with the colour and coverage of the inner lining beneath it.
Chiffon Rayon Emprime Fabric
100 GSM · 145cm wide · lightweight printed rayon, semi-sheer across all colourways
Shop Fabric — From $19/mThis one does not have an embossed motif, so the visual interest comes from the printed surface pattern rather than the woven texture. For garments where the overlay contribution should be a print rather than a raised woven surface, the chiffon rayon is the right choice. For garments where the overlay should add dimensional texture, the embossed jacquard is more appropriate.
Choosing the right lining
The lining choice affects the finished garment more than almost any other construction decision when working with a sheer overlay. The weight of the lining relative to the weight of the overlay determines the overall drape and movement of the finished piece. A heavy lining under a 102 GSM overlay will make the overlay look stiff and will anchor the garment in a way that reduces the floating quality that sheer fabric is supposed to provide. A lining that matches the overlay weight — or is close to it — allows both layers to move together and creates the fluid, layered silhouette the construction is designed to produce.
For the Sheer Lightweight Viscose Embossed Jacquard at 102 GSM, a lightweight viscose crepe or fine Nida lining in a matching colourway is the most balanced choice. For the Chiffon Rayon Emprime at 100 GSM, the same weight principle applies. Both overlays are better served by a lining that breathes rather than one that holds its shape, because the finished garment is meant to move rather than stand.
Colour and opacity testing
Because sheer overlay fabric changes in apparent colour and opacity depending on what is beneath it, order swatches before cutting. Test each swatch over the intended lining colour in both indoor and outdoor light — the same combination can read very differently in different lighting conditions, and occasion wear is worn in controlled interior light as often as in daylight. What looks like full tonal matching in natural light may show through more than expected under the warm artificial light of an event venue.
Both sheer overlay fabrics are available by the meter with swatches available for testing before yardage orders are placed.
